Plane Crashes Into Idaho Potato and Food Processing Plant, Pilot Dies During Crash

A plane crashed into an Idaho potato and food processing plant, killing the pilot, police said.

The plane hit Gem State Processing in Heyburn in East Idaho at roughly 8:35 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, city police said.

The Heyburn Police Department released this statement:

On April 13, 2022, at approximately 8:36 A.M., Heyburn Police was dispatched along with emergency responders to Gem State Processing in the City of Heyburn for an aircraft crash. Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office and Cassia County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist. Minidoka County Fire Protection District, North Cassia Fire, and Burley Fire along with EMS from Rupert responded to the scene as well.

The pilot and sole occupant of the plane sadly did not survive. None of the Gem State Processing employees were injured. The City of Heyburn sends its condolences to the family of the pilot, the aviation company, and to the Gem State Processing family during this difficult time.

The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board who are reviewing the statements of witnesses and reviewing additional evidence to determine the cause of the crash.

Idaho Statesman reported:

The single-engine plane crashed into the building and flipped on the roof, according to East Idaho News. It was registered to Spirit Air in Salmon, the news outlet reported.

The plane left the Salt Lake City International Airport at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, according to ABC 4. It was scheduled to land at the Burley Municipal Airport in Idaho at 8:35 a.m.

Gem State Processing sources 18,000 acres of Idaho potatoes, according to Oregon Potato.

Heyburn is about 160 miles southeast of Boise and 38 miles east of Twin Falls.
