A Liverpool fan died suddenly after falling ill before the club’s Champions League quarter final match with Benfica at Anfield on Wednesday night.

“It is with great regret that we can confirm that a supporter who was taken ill ahead of last night’s fixture against Benfica has sadly passed away,” the club said in a statement.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with the supporter’s family, loved ones and friends.”

BBC reported:

The club also thanked the emergency crews, stewards and supporters “for their heroic efforts”.

People have expressed their sympathy for the man on Twitter.

One fan said he had been sitting opposite and wanted to give “full credit” to the paramedics and support team “as you could see them trying everything.”

Another said he was “devastated” to hear the news, adding he “couldn’t get him out my mind all game.”

I’ve reported multiple incidents in recent months of UK football fans suddenly falling ill at stadiums.
